Well known by the people of Marseilles, the “Gabian” is present everywhere on the islands around Marseilles where its population has grown from around a 100 couples at the beginning of the 20th century to more than 10,000 couples in 2015.

This very opportunistic seabird takes advantage of available food on the open landfills located on the outskirts of Marseilles. It is responsible for the significant imbalance in terms of flora and fauna on the islands.

Did you know ?

On the islands around Marseilles, the proliferation of the yellow-legged gull is linked to that of the black rat. The bird droppings encourage the development of certain plants and these are in turn eaten by the rodent.
